RoHS is a mandatory directive drawn up by the European Parliament (EP). It stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive 2002/95/EC, short for Directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.
It is mainly used to regulate the materials and technical standards of electrical and electronic products to make them more favorable for human health and environmental protection.

The initiative of the directive was eliminate Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd), Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE), and four types of phthalate, totally ten substances, in electric and electronic products, with emphasis on maximum permitted concentration of Lead to be less than 0.1%.
